What’s New in OpenVOS Release 17.0?

I’ve been fielding questions from VOS customers who are considering upgrading to OpenVOS Release 17.0 and they are all asking the same question – what’s new, and why should I upgrade?  My strong recommendation is that VOS customers upgrade to OpenVOS Release 17.0.2 at their next maintenance opportunity. This is the latest maintenance release. My reasons are as follows:

1. Stratus has released several new layered products that depend upon OpenVOS 17.0. These products are not available on older VOS releases. The new products are: WebSphere MQ Client and Server for OpenVOS (a popular messaging middleware package from IBM), Apache with PHP for OpenVOS (a popular, open-source web server and scripting language), and MySQL for OpenVOS (a popular, open-source relational database). 2. Stratus has made significant performance improvements to the file and disk subsystems.  These improvements were a key aspect of the improved performance of the 3rd-generation V Series platforms but they will help all platforms. With the recent release of OpenVOS Release 17.0.2, which is a maintenance upgrade, we have improved the measurement of the performance of the ftScalable Storage Subsystem. If you use this subsystem, you can now obtain more accurate data on how your applications affect this subsystem.

3. If you are programming in the OpenVOS POSIX environment, this release adds support for a number of new headers and functions. It will be much easier for you to port open-source software to this release. For example, the POSIX environment now supports Unix domain sockets and System V IPC and Shared Memory functions. It supports thread cancellation, preemptive thread scheduling, and it supports sharing condition variables and mutexes between processes.
4. This release allows you to create files whose names are longer than 32 characters, and allows you to use a wider set of punctuation characters in file names, including the space character.
5. This release includes the new check_module_security command, which reports on common security issues.
6. As always, Stratus performed extensive regression testing on this release before declaring it ready for use. It is providing customers with a reliable, stable platform.

By the way, OpenVOS Release 17.0 supports all existing V Series platforms, from the Model 100 all the way up to the top-of-the-line Model 6308. So, no matter what V Series hardware you use, OpenVOS Release 17.0 will handle it.
